From the Farmer: Beretta Organic Farms
Every summer, we open up our family farm in King City for the day with one single task in mind – connecting children with where their food comes from. This past July 26 was an afternoon full of hay rides through the back fields where our pigs lie grazing with mud-soaked bellies and lambs jump after each other. From our cow milking demonstration, where the curious child inevitably asks about the chocolate milk cow, to a few broken yolks during the egg collecting trip in the hen house, the afternoon leaves kids with stories by the bushel to share with their friends.
When a child’s eyes widen with the marvel of seeing cattle up close, one begins to realize that all of us need this intrigue now and again. Young or old, we all need to be reminded of this simple fact: food doesn’t just appear on our grocery shelves. It involves work, patience, persistence and love to get it there. After seeing firsthand what goes into daily life on our farm, car rides home are full of ‘did you knows’ and new revelations for both the parents and children.

We love having our guests visit our farm every summer and invite friends new and old to experience the wonder, amusement and newfound gratitude that a day on the farm can bring. So as parents chase after their kin attempting to round up their own herd, many of our customers begin to realize that farming, much like parenting, involves strong nourishment and guidance and that both endeavours are quite often taken for granted.

The next time you pack lunch or prepare dinner, remember that each meal you serve your family originated from somewhere just like our farm by families just like the Berettas. We welcome you and your herd to share this experience with us next summer and walk a day in our hoofs.
