A Legion of Thieves

Book Advisory Source:

Just a Simple Pharmacist by Frank Rasky

A policeman who sticks pens into his pocket, a professor who purloins a box of birthday cards, a psychiatrist who lifts Estee Lauder eyeliner and blusher, who when caught, tearfully confesses that he, himself, regularly treats kleptomaniacs.

These are three of a legion of thieves - the estimated one in 20 who are caught - who annually walk off with $18 million in merchandise (1% of sales) at Shoppers Drug Mart.

"Just a Simple Pharmacist" tells their story, and that of Murray Koffler, who at the age of 17, on the death of his father, took over the family drug store, turning it into a 500-store pharmacy chain.

Initially, Koffler imagined himself the Dick Tracy of pharmacy, basing a decision to nab a suspect on intuition. However after he grabbed a man’s arm in a cast which turned out to be a real cast, he decided he needed help. Typical of the entrepreneur, he went out and got the best. Koffler hosted a think-tank at the Inn on the Park in Toronto, part of a hotel chain which he

co-founded, inviting top security specialists, police & psychologists.  The conference came up with some interesting facts:

* 30% of the chain’s theft was the handiwork of shoplifters who used everything from double girdles with kangaroo pouches to boxes with false bottoms.

* 50% resulted from inside theft such as sweetheart cashiers who do not ring up purchases by boyfriends

or relatives.

* 20% was caused by pricing or bookkeeping errors and accidental breakage.

From this Koffler mapped out a loss prevention program from banning pockets in cashier’s uniforms to surprise audits of tills to an array of openly displayed and hidden cameras. o

and focusing your mind.

Tests show that when you need

to work hard for two hours, you

tend to work at an unfocused 75%

to 80%, but a 15 minute break will

allow you to work for an hour and 45 minutes at 100%.
