Greetings!
I’m writing this message in late May, flat on my back with severe back pain. I’m not sure what happened but it sure slows you down. On the positive side it gives me a chance to write this message. We just had a great rain here which was much appreciated and needed. Our farm opened for business the 1 st weekend in May. Sales have been good both retail and group visits. We lost a lot of early strawberry blossoms due to the May 13th frost. It’s times like these that it is nice to be as diversified as we are to help lesson the impact of such occurrences.Just a reminder during the summer, to keep in mind "Progress North", the joint direct marketing conference between OFFMA & NAFDMA, January 14 – 20, 2002 in Toronto. Talk to your friends and neighbours about the conference. Encourage farmers from the grain, poultry, beef, horse, or dairy farms to come to the conference and bus tour. Participating in the conf. and networking with farmers from across North America is an opportunity to get some great ideas, on how to get extra value from their operations or provide an opportunity for their children to stay on the farm and develop new enterprises. If you are involved in 4-H, or one of the Ag. Colleges, encourage these young people to participate. It will expose them to new opportunities for their family’s |
farms and give them as
individuals, a possible future in agriculture.
One other thing to remember is, we want sponsorships for the conference to help defray some of the cost of putting it on. If you have any special contacts with a company (banks, insurance co. or a major supplier to our industry) contact them and then pass it on to Bob and Donna who will coordinate sponsorships. All contributions, whether money, products, or services, will be greatly appreciated and will certainly be recognized. In closing, I must tell you a story about my 9 year old son Daniel. Last Sunday on our way home from church he saw a man with a small hand held sprayer, spraying some weeds on his lawn. He asked me "what is that man doing dad?" I said that he was probably trying to kill some dandelions on his lawn. Daniel started to laugh and said, "why would he want to kill flowers?" I had to explain, that some people consider dandelions weeds. This story probably tells you something about our lawn and how differently people can perceive the same thing. Jim Forsythe, OFFMA President Forsythe Family Farms
